A section through a root caries lesion showing progress of the demineralisation leaving a relatively intact layer on the surface. This specimen is imbibed in water and photographed under  polarized light and highlights the layer of porosity beneath the intact surface. Application of fluoride will increase the resistance of the surface layer to further demineralisation.
