A cross section of the crown of a tooth showing the earliest stage of a “white spot lesion” immediately below the contact area on the proximal surface. There has been no damage to the integrity of the surface of the enamel so plaque can still be easily removed. There is no response showing in the dentine and the demineralisation is sub-surface and the lesion can be remineralised and healed quite readily.
